Famous People With Type 1 Diabetes

Type-1 diabetes is a health problem where the body fails to produce sufficient insulin, a hormone that is responsible for converting glucose into energy. This condition affects millions of people worldwide and the famous people are no exception.

Several famous athletes,musicians and actors have type 1 diabetes. Some of them developed the disease later in life while others were diagnosed when they were children. The following some of the famous people with diabetes

1. Halle Berry

Renowned actress, Halle Berry tested positive with type-1 diabetes in 1989 after going into a coma during the recording of a television series Living Dolls’. Since then, she has been engaged in diabetes awareness campaigns.

However, a few years ago, she created controversy when she stated that she would classify herself as a type 2 diabetic as she had weaned herself off insulin.

2. Mary Tyler Moore

Mary Tyler Moore is famous for her roles in the the Dick Van Dyke show’ and Mary Tyler Moore Show’. Now in her early 80s, she has used her fame to sensitize on diabetes as well as raise funds.

She tested positive with type 1 diabetes at the age of 33. Immediately after, she became the Chairwoman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research foundation and has written a book ‘growing up again’ where she has shared her story.

3. Crystal Bowersox

Crystal Bowersox, an American singer and songwriter tested positive with 1 diabetes at the age of 6. She had to leave the 2010 American idol competition after she went into diabetic Ketoacidosis, (DKA) a fatal diabetic condition that can lead to coma or even death.

After surviving DKA, Bowersox now uses her fame to speak out about type 1 diabetes. She is an advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation whose role is to look for better treatment and cure for type 1 diabetes.

4. Jean Smart

Actress Jean Smart became famous after landing a role on the television series Designing Women’. She has starred in other television shows, movies including thriller 24.

She was 13 years when her mother informed her that he was diabetic and has dedicated herself as a fundraiser, mentor and activist in the batter against the type diabetes.

5. Elliott Yamin

Elliott Yamin is best known for his voice which won him the second runners up in American idol fifth season. Today, he is also making news as a diabetes advocate. He was informed about his diabetic condition at the age of 16 after his mother with type 2 diabetes recognized his joint thirst, extreme thirst as warning signs of high blood sugar.

Though Yamin was not so comfortable with the diagnosis at first, today, he speaks openly to his fans about the condition and even opened up to the American idol during his audition.

6. Bret Michaels

Bret Michaels is well known for his role as a reality star in Rock of Love’ and as the lead singer of the Rock band poison.After a series of test, Bret tested positive with type 1 diabetes at the age of 6 but never came open about the condition after the release of Poison first album.

In an interview with new York Times, his advice to those living with type 1 diabetes was to accept the disease and continue taking insulin.
